So lets put on the jerseys of our favorite NBA team whether you're a Celtics or Knicks fan and lets enjoy the review of this game. Because this happens to be my most favorite NBA video game, long before the NBA 2K series ever existed.
Plot. No plot outlines, it's a sports game of course. Hahaha.
This game has the same rules of NBA Jam, which includes two-on-two match ups, statistics tracking, legal pushing and "on fire" mode. Players can make alley-oops and slam dunks as well. However, they must shoot before the shot clock timer runs out, prompting a shot clock violation. Players can choose from any of 29 teams of the 1995-1996 NBA Season, and the new team introduced is the Vancouver Grizzlies.
Concept. Players can play from beginning of a season until they get to the championship. For Championship mode, players can play single or co-op with friends and family to make it more interesting and fun. Players can choose to create a players, making them stronger after earning attributes points when winning games.
Design. Characters are sprite rendered into 2.5 dimensions, which is really cool. Also, the courts are very well designed. Midway did an awesome job at creating a game that has the same aspects as NBA Jam.
Memories. I played this game when I was 10 years old at my cousin's when they got him his N64 in the time I also wanted one. And only in the summer of 1997 I got my N64, because my parents tried to turn me into some bookworm or sportsman. But well, everyone is who they choose to be, not what their parents choose them to be. I really had fun playing this basketball game, but I never had much love for the SNES version.
Rantings. Now, my most hated team to play against in the beginning was the Vancouver Grizzlies, I always got pissed off when Reeves stole the ball from me. Some custom faces were pretty ridiculous, but hilarious in a way. Also, if NBA Jam had Mortal Kombat characters, they definitely should have added them in this one too.
Good Aspects. The music, background voice acting, gameplay and graphics define the basketball game. This happens to be a very fun game to play with your friends and your family, with it's high replay value.
Overall. NBA Hangtime gets an 8 out of 10.
