In his statement, he said: "Major corporations, including the video game industry, make billions on marketing and selling violent content to children. They have a responsibility to protect our children. If they do not, you can count on the Congress to take a more aggressive role." This bill would direct the NAS (National Academy of Sciences) to conduct an "investigation" on violent video games, violent programming and it's harmful effects on children. Specifically talking, they would have to conduct whether or not these games can be harmful to our children's "well being".
Senator Rockefeller also said he will call on the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) and the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to further their work in this area. And he also stated that "Changes in technology now allow kids to access violent content online with less parental involvement. It is time for these two agencies to take a fresh look at these issues."
If this bill passes, it won't be long before things get very volatile in the video game community. Now, my rant about it is, that it's not the fault of the video games. Surely at times they have suggestive messages that could influence negatively on people, but at the same time they can have positive influences and life lessons that they teach. Various games like Final Fantasy and Mass Effect have good messages as some that can be a little bit too suggestive in some ways.
The real question is: WHERE ARE THE PARENTS? Why can't they teach them the major difference between fantasy and reality? Another thing is, why do 8 year olds play violent games like Call of Duty and any game that involves shooting anything that moves all over the place? My suggestion is that the parents have to be more attentive to what their kids really want. You know, I do not call this democracy, I call this HYPOCRISY.
13 years ago video games were blamed over the Columbine High School massacre, since Harris and Klebold were fans of Doom. Five years ago games were once again blamed over the Virginia Tech Massacre, and many incidents involving kids and teenagers with real guns involved blaming games such as Grand Theft Auto. The disbarred attorney Jack Thompson represented many angry parents filing lawsuits against Grand Theft Auto, Call of Duty, Doom, Duke Nukem and many other violent video games. Also, the shooting at the mall during the premiere of The Dark Knight Rises, video games were blamed again, and in the wake of Sandy Hook, games are once again blamed.
Some politicians just don't get the fucking point, WHERE ARE THE PARENTS? That is the question. It is negligence that causes those kids to snap, when some kids can't take the torment of bullies anymore, or some psychopath like that shooter decides to kill all those poor children in cold blood. God forbid some parents are just as negligent as those who can't even teach their kids the difference between fantasy and reality. Don't blame video games, most parents can't even be attentive and pay more attention to what their kids are playing and watching TV shows for people 14 and up, even worse, when they watch online pornography.
That is all I have to say about this issue.
God bless and Play Hard Gamers!
