This game faithfully follows the story from the beginning of Dragon Ball Z to the Frieza Saga on Planet Namek. This game, though it sold very good, it was not very well recieved by critics and die hard fans of DBZ. This game will make fans believe this game to be a great disappointment to the DBZ games, which is actually very true.
Plot. Five years have passed since the World Tournament, in which Goku emerged victorious against Piccolo. Goku lives a normal life with his wife Chi-Chi and their son Gohan. But that peace is about to end, as Raditz, the brother of Goku, arrives and takes Gohan hostage during a visit to Master Roshi, Bulma, and Krillin. Goku then forms an unlikely alliance with his nemesis, Piccolo to rescue Gohan. When Goku and Piccolo defeat Raditz, it's not all over, as in one year, two more Saiyans will arrive to destroy the Earth. This story follows from the Saiyan Saga to the Frieza Saga.
Concept. Players take the role of Goku, in which at the beginning, they must rescue Gohan from the clutches of Raditz, while performing side-quests throughout the forest. Then they must go through the Snake Way, the Home for Infinite Losers, training with King Kai and even battling Princess Snake. Then when revived, players get to fight against Nappa and Vegeta. Then they head to Namek to fight Frieza and his cronies such as: Zarbon, Dodoria, and the Ginyu Force.
Design. The game is an RPG game played in an eagle-eye perspective. However, this does not make up for the poor aspects of the game. After defeating bosses and going to start a new quest, scenes from the anime series are shown. The intro and ending sequences however are very well made.
Rantings. Though the game is well designed and stays faithful to the Saiyan, Namek, and Frieza Sagas, this game is terrible for many bad aspects it has. Goku starts out with poor strength and defense, for a World Martial Arts Champion, and even a common wolf can prove to be a challenge. The bosses are tough, that Goku could even die in one or two blows. The chore-like quests are very tedious and stupid, I mean: retrieve a child's toy boat?! Come on! Also, the lazy developers thought: "This game is not hard enough, so let's make this even inaccurate too?" Goku being taught the Kamehameha by King Kai?! WHAT WERE THEY THINKING?! Also the graphical use is very poor, players trying to fly off somewhere, only to run into an invisible barrier, thus wasting flight charges every single second.
Good Aspects. Only things I like about this game are the appearance of most of the characters, which was good. Also, the intro and ending sequences are a reminder of the anime series. If the developers weren't so lazy, they would have done better. And they did better when they made the sequel to this game, and also Buu's Fury.
Overall. Dragon Ball Z: Legacy of Goku, has a poor replay value, and it is not a very good game. Play the sequel, is much better. This game gets a 4 out of 10.
